It is good in healing acne, dryness, burns, rashes, sunburns, bug bites, minor cuts or wounds, and other skin problems. It is highly moisturizing and also, you can make your aloe vera gel in just a few steps.

So instead of wasting money to buy commercial aloe vera products which contain potentially harmful additives like dyes, here is how you can make it on your own in just 5 steps.

Things You Will Need to Make Aloe Vera Gel:

  • Aloe vera leaf
  • A sharp knife
  • Blender
  • Clean bowl
  • Glass
  • Water

How to make aloe vera gel in 5 easy steps:

1.) Find the right leave.

If you have several aloe vera plants, use the older one.

Try to choose large and thick leaves that are growing at the base of the plant. You will get the most nutrient if you cut as close to the central stalk as possible.

2.) Cut your leaves using a clean knife.

If you tear the leaves off, it may damage the plant. The best solution is to use a knife. Make sure that your knife is sharp and clean, otherwise, you could bring bacteria on your aloe vera.

After you cut the leaves, put them in a glass, with a cut side down to drain.

3.) Let the aloe vera drain for about 10-15 minutes and then rinse it.

Aloe contains a yellow latex substance called aloin. This yellow sap (latex) can cause severe gastric distress if you ingest it. To rinse up the yellow sap off, let the aloe drain for about 10-15 minutes in water and then rinse your leaves off with cold water and dry them.

If you want to use aloe vera on your skin, you can squeeze it out of the leaf and apply it directly.

But to get at the aloe vera gel, you will need to cut the skin away.

4.) Use a knife to remove the skin from aloe vera.

A filet knife will be the most practical to remove the skin from your aloe.

The first step is to make a long, lengthwise incision in the middle of the leaf to peel off the skin.

The next step is to place your knife right under the rind and slide it along the length of the leaf to pull off the skin. Just make sure to stay close to the skin so you can get as much gel as possible.

Repeat the same procedure for the other half of the skin. And the end carefully scoop out the pulp and collect it in a bowl with the help of the spoon.

5.) Blend the aloe vera for a few seconds.

Put the aloe vera in a blender for a few seconds, pour it into a clean storage container and refrigerate it. It will stay fresh in the refrigerator for about a week, according to wellnessmama.com.

Preserving The Aloe Vera Gel

As fresh aloe vera gel will only be good for about a week in the refrigerator, we found three ways how can you store aloe vera gel, according to wikihow.com.

Here are three ways how can you store aloe vera gel:

1. Freezing the gel

Use an ice cube tray to store your aloe vera gel in. It is better to store aloe in ice tube trays than in one large block because it will be easier to take out individual pieces when you need them. Silicone tray will be the best, but if you don’t have it use the plastic one.

Just fill the tray with the aloe vera gel and place it in the freezer. Freeze the aloe vera cubes overnight and transfer them into a sealable plastic bag. You can store aloe vera cubes in your freezer for up to a year.

2. Mixing the aloe vera gel with honey

Pour the aloe vera gel and honey into a plastic container at a 1:1 ratio and mix them. Honey will preserve the gel because it contains a low water content and a high natural sugar content.

You can store the gel in the fridge or at room temperature for up to 8 months but keep the gel away from direct sunlight.

3. Blending with Vitamin C

Put aloe vera gel into a blender and add a vitamin C tablet. For every ¼ cup (60ml) of gel, add in 500 milligrams (0.018 oz) of vitamin C to the mixture, as wikihow.com recommends.

When you blend it, you will get aloe vera juice. Transfer the juice into a covered plastic container and store it into a refrigerator. You can store it in the refrigerator up for a month.
