5 Simple Ways How To Clean Makeup Brushes

Believe it or not, this is an important topic that many of us don’t understand and even don’t think about it.

But cleaning your makeup brushes is an important habit to keep your skin healthy and to protect it from many different problems that may occur.

We can say that we use makeup brushes almost every day, sometimes even a few times a day, especially if we are fixing our makeup.

Here is a short explanation of what is happening while we do that.

So, while we are using our brushes we pass the bacteria from the skin to the brush, then when we are using it again we transfer those bacteria from the brushes back to our skin.

This cycle repeats over and over again, which can result in a very bad way for the health of our skin.

Just imagine how many bad bacteria are accumulated on that same brush that we using on daily bases.

One more thing that most of the people would probably agree with is that everyone is looking to get the most quality products which will last longer and will not damage our skin, but we do not pay enough attention to the care of our makeup brushes.

Because of that, we will give you the answer to the most important questions when it comes to cleaning makeup brushes and help you to develop a new routine that could save you skin from many problems.

What Is The Best Way To Clean Makeup Brushes At Home?

For cleaning your makeup brushes you can use one of these products that you can find on amazon which are intended for washing makeup brushes.

But there are more ways to do it successfully without purchasing any of these products above.

Here is how:

1.) Use soap to clean makeup brushes

The easiest way to clean your brushes is by using water and gentle soap.

This process is really simple:

  • First, you want to wash your hands to prevent spreading bacteria from your hands to your brushes.
  • Then you want to wet all of your makeup brushes.
  • After that, take a little bit of soap on your palms and gently massage the brushes on your palms one by one until you wash all the makeup remains from them.
  • The last step is to rinse the brushes and squeeze the moisture out with a clean towel.

Let the brushes dry, turning the bristles upside down.

When the brushes are dried they are ready for use.

You can do the same thing using baby shampoo instead of soap.

2.) Clean your makeup brushes with vinegar

This is a good method because vinegar has an antibacterial effect. It kills all the bacteria, removes dead skin cells and removes the remains of makeup from brushes.

Here is how:

  • In a cup of hot water, put a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
  • Then dip the brush one by one in that cup by doing circular motions.
  • After that just rinse the brushes in cold water and leave it to dry.

3.) Remove makeup from your brushes with olive oil

Combining soap with olive oil will defiantly do a great job. Olive oil will break down any of the makeup that has built up over time. It will clean it and it will renew the bristles.

Process in this method is next:

You’ll need a medium to large dinner plate (not paper) to clean the makeup brushes.

  • Start by adding the soap and olive oil to the plate in ratio 3:1 (3 teaspoons of soap and 1 teaspoon of oil)
  • Again with circular movements gently rub the brushes around on the plate.
  • After that rinse it in water (don’t use hot water), squeeze the water out of the brushes and let them dry.

This method of cleaning is recommended in heavy makeup brush cleaning.

4.) Clean your brushes with baking soda

Using baking soda to clean your brushes is another quick and cheap method.

There are no big differences in steps related to other methods of cleaning.

So again you will need some kind of bowl or a cup where you are going to add water and teaspoon of baking soda.

After that, you will put your brushes to soak there for about 30min. And for the end, like always, rinse the brushes and let them dry.

5.) An additional tool for cleaning your makeup brushes

This is a board that allows you to clean up your makeup brushes even more effectively.

You can find it on Amazon at an affordable price.

If you are unable to buy it, don’t worry, we have a backup plan for you.

You can make your own makeup brush cleaner board.

Here is how:

For making your own brush cleaning board you will need:

Can Dirty Makeup Brushes Cause Pimples?

The answer is YES!

Bacteria, dust, dirt, toilet germs, makeup remains, oil, dead skin cells, and more bad things accumulate on your makeup brushes.

All these things irritate your skin and cause pimples, acne breakouts, and other skin problems.

So remember to clean makeup brushes because you are doing it for yourself, not for others.

How Often Should You Clean Makeup Brushes?

Well, there is no rule how often you should do it, but most professionals and American Academy of Dermatology recommend to wash them every 7 to 10 days. This way you will stop bacteria accumulation on your makeup brushes and save your skin.

Just to mention, don’t forget to be gentle while you are cleaning your brushes, because you can damage the bristles and then you will need to get new ones.

To prevent this from happening keep these 2 things in your mind:

  • Don’t wash your brushes with hot water!
  • Always let the brushes dry with the bristles turned upside down. This allows the air to circulate around the bristles and it helps brushes to dry faster.

How Long Can Makeup Brushes Last?

There is no specific answer to this question because every single person has different habits in using their makeup brushes.

Someone uses them once a day, someone uses them a few times a day, someone cleans them regularly and carefully and others don’t.

So the best answer to this particular question when you should replace your makeup brushes depends on you.

But if they are not shedding, smell, severely discolored then you can still use them.
